In 14 kilometers from Batumi, near to a mouth of the river Chorokhi, is Gonio fortress, the major archeological and architectural monument of Georgia. The first data on it meets at Roman writer Plinija younger (1 century B.C.). In the Greece-Roman sources meets under name Apsarunt. In 6-8 centuries the fortress was a part of the Vyzantian Empire. At 13-14 centuries "restoration" of a fortress on sources it is attributed to Genoeses. Assume, that the name "Gonio" has occurred from Genoa. In 1547 Osmanli Turks have grasped Gonio and the fortress was in their possession until 1878. Today the area of a fortress makes 5 hectares, length of walls of 9 meters. In territory of a fortress to this day, archeological excavations are conducted, and finds are placed in various museums of the world.
